Social Security Disability and Getting Disability Benefits
If you are disabled and unable to work, you may be eligible for monetary benefits through the Social Security system. The Social Security system provides two types of benefits for those who are disabled and unable to work. The first is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). SSDI provides monthly income benefits based upon the number of years you have paid into the Social Security system through your payroll tax deductions. The second type of benefit is Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI is designed to cover disabled children and adults regardless of their work history and whether they have paid into the Social Security system. However, income-eligibility restrictions apply to SSI benefits.
Applying for Social Security disability benefits can be time consuming and confusing. Approximately 75% of all disability applicants are initially denied.
