On August 17, 2017, Attorneys Jeremy Stevens and Grant Borgen were admitted to practice in the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals is the court that hears appeals from cases venued in the federal district court of Minnesota. The Eighth Circuit also hears appeals from cases venued in the federal district courts of Iowa, Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
Parties aggrieved by a decision in the aforementioned district courts can appeal their case to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals is a matter of right. In other words, the Eighth Circuit is required to hear any appeal from these federal district courts. If a party does not agree with the Eighth Circuit’s decision, the party can ask the United States Supreme Court to hear the case.
The United States Supreme Court, however, is a court that has discretion to choose which cases it hears. In other words, while any party can take any federal case to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, a further appeal requires an agreement from the justices of the United States Supreme Court to hear the case. The justices agree to hear roughly 1% of all requests made.
